Meet Head Chef from Chez Mal, Douglas Macdonald

We posed our '10 questions' to Douglas and here's what he had to say:


1. Best coffee in Glasgow?

I’m not a coffee drinker but I do love a good old builders tea!


2. Best for brunch?

Public House by Nico – amazing food and cocktails!


3. Best for a Romantic meal?

Some might say it’s not romantic, but my wife and I love Ubiquitous Chip. We’ve celebrated our last 3 anniversaries there so that must say something.


4. Best place for groups of friends/family?

The Mint in Coatbridge. Ideal for a casual drink or bite to eat! Staff are really friendly and the kids love it.


5. What's your hidden gem?

Not sure it’s classed as a hidden gem but Dim Sum is great! Serves some of the best dim sum in the city.


6. Best bar?

I really like McPhabbs on Sauchiehall Street. It has your ‘cosy local’ feel and nothing beats an ice cold beer after a long shift in the kitchen!


7. Best chef in the city?

Well I need to do a shout out to Chez Mal’s previous Head Chef, John Burns! As well as John, I’d say my brother Jamie Macdonald and my old Head Chef, Stuart Goldie. All three are fantastic at what they do.


8. Best dish you've ever eaten?

It has got to be my mum’s Sunday Roast. Absolutely delicious – no Chef can top it!


9. You're hosting a dinner and can invite 6 guests, dead or alive, who would you ask?

Stan Lee, Sir Ian McKellen, Oliver Reed, David Bowie, Snoop Dogg and Marilyn Monroe. If I could have a 7th special guest appearance, I’d ask Sean Connery, simply to see if he does a good Yoda impression!


10. Glasgow's best restaurant?

Chez Mal of course!
