GUEST BLOG: Showcasing Food and Drink Scotland

We have been chatting with the team at Showcasing Food and Drink Scotland about shopping local and getting Glasgow and its best restaurants on board.

They kindly agreed to guest blog this week to tell us all about what they do and how to get involved.

Glasgow: A city bustling with some of Scotland’s best food and drink

There’s no denying that Scotland’s food and drink industry is booming and Glasgow’s restaurant scene is bustling with culinary delights for the city’s food enthusiasts and visitors to the world’s friendliest city. Behind all of these successful restaurants is a great story. A story of provenance and a showcase of the excellence in Scottish food and drink.

Research by Scotland Food & Drink shows that the demand from customers for Scottish produce is plentiful. 70% of Scots believe food produced here is of higher quality than elsewhere, that almost half of Scottish shoppers say they will try to buy even more local food in the future and 52% of Scots are prepared to pay more for Scottish food and drink.

When visitors come to Scotland, over half say that they actively look to indulge in the very best of our natural larder and we know that their experience exceeds their expectations. The recent research by VisitScotland also shows us that local food and drink is what customers want, and more and more people are looking to sample the very best of a region's offering.

It's this commitment to using local ingredients on menus and stocking Scottish drinks behind the bar that has meant restaurants in the city are experiencing phenomenal success. With visitors flocking to Glasgow in 2018 for the European Championships, there has never been a better time to showcase what the city has to offer. The Glasgow 2018 Food Charter will help visitors return home not just with a memory of great sport and culture, but fabulous food too.

Despite this success, there is still room to do more to keep the Glasgow food scene shining brightly. Whether you are a chef, restaurateur or hotelier, there’s a fantastic opportunity coming up to meet the country’s finest producers under one roof - to connect, build relationships and work together to give customers the very best dining experiences.

Scotland Food & Drink will bring together suppliers and buyers to do business at Showcasing Scotland Regional Events. The first will take place next month at Hampden Park, Glasgow on 7th March and is the first of five new, major trade events which will open up sales opportunities for businesses.

In taking the successful Showcasing Scotland concept to a regional level, Scotland Food & Drink is providing a range of prospective buyers the opportunity to grow their Scottish offering by introducing them to outstanding Scottish producers.

The future is bright for the food and drink scene in Scotland. We need everyone to step up, source Scottish produce, support the people behind it and embrace opportunities for businesses to grow by featuring as much local produce on menus and behind bars as possible.

Showcasing Scotland – West will help chefs and food and drink buyers do just that, and we very much hope to see you there.
