10 things...Meet Anne Mulhern, owner of The Willow Tearooms

Anne Mulhern is well known in the hospitality scene and has a passion for creating a community across the city to encourage locals and tourists alike to enjoy the great food on offer in Glasgow. We are lucky to grab time with Anne (again - what a legend!) to chat about her favourites in the city.

What is the best coffee in Glasgow in your opinion?

My go-to place is Laboratorio Espresso – any time I am travelling and want a coffee to go then I have to make a detour to West Nile Street.

Best brunch in the city?

It has to be Café Gandolfi: every single time!

The friendly and personable service from Seamus and the team combined with a great breakfast menu keeps me coming back, time and time again.

It helps that Seamus and I share the same ideals in business: sourcing as many raw materials as possible from our great local suppliers.

Best for a Romantic Meal?

Restaurant Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles: the setting, the food, the atmosphere, it has everything you could possibly want and more.

The best place for groups of friends and family?

Eusebi’s Deli! Giovanna and the team go out of their way to make sure you have a great experience with your friends and family. The atmosphere is perfect for a group to get together and enjoy some delicious home cooked Italian food.

Any hidden gems in the city?

Partick Duck Club in Hyndland Street. This is the first solo venture for the lovely Ross and Greig and they deserve to be a great success as they work so hard and put their all into it. It is open 7 days a week from early until late. The menu is brilliant and the atmosphere is relaxed: most definitely one to add to your list.

Best bar in the city?

The Bar at the Dakota Deluxe Hotel is beautiful and the perfect setting that appeals to all ages.

Who is the best chef in the city?

Our very own Masterchef: Gary MacLean. Gary is not only a great chef but a great ambassador for both the hospitality industry and the City of Glasgow College which is producing amazing talent at the moment.

What is the best dish you’ve ever eaten?

Hands down the smoked lobster at Restaurant Andrew Fairlie’s, I must think about it at least once a week.

You are hosting a dinner party and can invite 6 guests, dead or alive, who would you ask?

In no particular order:

Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Kate Cranston, Archie Forrest, George Michael, Seamus Macinnes – oh and David, my husband, to do the dishes!

What is, for you, Glasgow’s Best Restaurant?

Cail Bruich. It is a great place for a celebration. I am a big fan of Scottish cuisine and I love the way Cail Bruich’s menus reflect this. The tasting menu is a real treat and great value for money. I am also probably slightly biased as one of the chef’s, Kevin McCafferty, is not only an excellent young chef and the winner of the Young Chef Olympiad, but is my son Ryan’s friend.

Inspired by the works of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the Willow Tea Rooms at 97 Buchanan Street and located on the 3rd floor of Watt Brothers, Sauchiehall Street.
